With all the evidence showing that most Americans support the legalization of marijuana you may wonder why it is still illegal in most of America. Well reporter Lee Fang just may have it figured out, and it may be no surprise that money is at the root of problem.
In an article from The Nation, Fang reveals that some of the most powerful anti marijuana lobbying groups such as the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America and Partnership For Drug Free Kids are getting support from some interesting sources.
Lee states that these organizations “derive a significant portion of their budget from opioid manufacturers and other pharmaceutical companies.” Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of Oxy-Contin, a powerful and highly abused painkiller is among one of the most prominent of the contributors.
Also among the big supporters fighting against are law enforcement organizations. Retired Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Stephen Downing is quoted saying, “It’s money, In many states, the city government expects police to make seizures, and they expect these seizures to supplement their budgets.”
